Khoi Culture and Suurbraak Heritage

On this course you will experience the historic village of Suurbraak, part of the greater Swellendam municipality, learning about its history. You will interact with residents hearing their stories and learning of their challenges and dreams . Enjoy the preparation and eating of traditional food and participate in some of the the customs.


Anyone who loves our beautiful country and wants to understand all of its people. Participants must be able to walk.

This course is participative and involves walking so a moderate level of fitness is required. There will be time to ask questions and gain better understanding.

About The Instructor

Donovan grew up in Suurbraak in the care of his grandparents. He matriculated in Swellendam and headed off to college. He returned to his home town fully aware of its challenges and problems and determined to make a difference. His positivity will not allow him to focus on the problems and he works tirelessly with young people in order to make them aware of the possibility of a brighter future. He is a talented, self taught artist and a poet. He has had art exhibitions both locally and in England and expresses challenges and hopes through his art. This young man has wisdom beyond his years and meeting him and experiencing this course is potentially life changing.

Course Details

On arrival there will be a welcome drink and an introduction to the history of Suurbraak followed by a tour and interaction with the locals.

After tea you will participate in an artistic experience with local clay – no ability or experience necessary. Preparation of a traditional meal will be enjoyed at a local home where you will have lunch.

In the afternoon Donovan will enlighten you on the traditions and the history of the Koi people. Weather permitting the day will end with a walk to the river and a rock balancing and gratitude ceremony.
